Have you heard the story behind the Fairy Steps in Beetham? Back in February we went to find out for ourselves as we explored a walk you can take on a day out in the area.

Parking at Heron Corn Mill, we took the walk to the Fairy Steps from a little further out. Taking in the village of Beetham, before heading across the fields lines, we followed the route lined with trees and limestone boulders. The woodland you hit then opens up suddenly, in to an area of limestone that is like something out of a Planet of the Apes movie.

We reached the Fairy Steps from the top and walked down them, but of course you can arrive the other way and walk up the steps as there are various paths through the woods.

What are the Fairy Steps? They are a few steps within a tiny gap in the stone landscape and the folk-lore story is, that if you can walk them without touching the walls either side, you will see a fairy. Neither of us were tiny enough to achieve this, but I wonder if children get to achieve this magic.

The walk is an easy one, to do with children and dogs, with the options to head for coffee and cake afterwards at either Beetham Nurseries garden centre cafe, or drive a little further and find the Wolf House Gallery near Silverdale.
