We have an absolute luxury here at St Marks Stays in that we have a walking route to Cautley Spout Waterfall right here on our doorstep. The highest waterfall in England is worth a visit and whether you take Damian as your walking guide, or simply visit the bottom of it, there are possibilities to view it for everyone. Wondering if it is for you … then let our visual guide tempt you.
Following Steps End public footpath just close by to our house, you head out over the River Rawthey and up the hills in to the glorious scenery of the Howgill Fells. Reaching the next bridge is the point where the paths join if you are taking a gentler route to the base of the Waterfall from our local Temperance Inn, The Cross Keys.
The walk up the side of the waterfall can be steep in parts, but accessible due to the stones steps and is achievable if you wish to simply take your time. Best tip is to remember to stop and look back as the view is beautiful.
As you reach the top of Cautley Spout, you have the choice to step over the waterfall itself and follow the crystal clear water as it winds along the valley before you reach the slopes of the highest point of the Howell Fells, known as the Calf. You may be tired at this point but the breath-taking views over the Lake District are worth it.
On our walk we chose to walk back to St Marks Stays via the hills, which does require some suitable walking boots, or footwear, mainly because we wanted to view the house from the top of the hill that you see from our garden, but also so we could finally say to people when they ask, “Yes we have been to the top of that hill”. There are other routes however, if a hill descent is not for you.
There is something for everyone with a visit to Cautley Spout and next time, we think a hamper picnic full of local produce could be just the added extra to make it perfect … who’s in!
